Starting immediately after the Lenten season, CatholicTV will begin airing a series by Father Benedict Groeschel entitled “Prayer in the Catechism”. Fr. Greoschel is one of the original founders of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.
“Prayer in the Catechism” features Fr. Groeschel teaching and talking about the Catechism and the bible with an emphasis on prayer. His discussion of prayer is based on the premise that an essential condition of prayer is devotion- the belief that God is listening and cares for us. In prayer in the Catechism, Fr. Groeschel discusses the various kinds of prayer, including a special emphasis on using scripture when praying. CatholicTV broadcasts faith formation and education series in order to assist viewers in their faith journey. The catechism contains basic Christian teaching formatted for learning and understanding. Benedict Joseph Groeschel, CFR is a Catholic priest, retreat master, author, psychologist, activist and host of a television talk program. He is the director of the Office for Spiritual Development for the Catholic Archdiocese of New York as well as associate director of Trinity Retreat and the executive director of The St. Francis House. He is professor of pastoral psychology at St. Joseph's Seminary in New York and an adjunct professor at the Institute for Psychological Sciences in Arlington, Virginia.
The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal order was founded in 1987 by eight Capuchin priests including Father Stan Fortuna and Father Benedict Groeschel. The Friars of the Renewal wear gray religious habits with hoods, a belt, and sandals. Beards are also characteristic of the order. The ropes they wear as belts around their waists symbolize the three vows they take upon becoming friars. These are shown with individual knots, signifying the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
The community was founded for a return to the authentic Capuchin way of life and the renewal of the Catholic Church. In addition, the friars are known for their fidelity to the Pope. The Community characterizes itself as Catholic, Franciscan, Capuchin, Contemplative, Prophetic, Apostolic, Fraternal and Pro-life.
