Pro Life Month: Finding the Courage to Talk About Abortion

Have you ever heard of the "spiral of silence"? Put simply, this theory says that people are less likely to voice their opinion about something if they believe they are in the minority. I always pictured an Odyssey-style whirlpool or a sinkhole when learning about this theory in college communications classes. When one person is silent, others around her lose their courage to speak, and still more around them lose their courage to speak. The result is an ever increasing number of people being pulled into silence because of a pervasive fear.

You probably didn't know that most people are pro life. If you're anything like me, you may know rationally that at least half of Americans are pro life, but you still feel like you're in the minority. It's easy to dismiss abortion as an off-limits topic, especially if you think no one agrees with you. But the way we fight the spiral of silence is by letting people around us know that they are not alone in their convictions.

In this latest LifeLine, Carolee McGrath talks about having courage to talk about abortion.

October: The Pro-Life Month

October is traditionally known as the month of the rosary (and during this month we give special honor to Mary), and so it's fitting that it is also Pro-Life month. The renewal of our prayer lives in this month can well serve an issue which requires a lot of prayer.

In honor of Pro-Life month, CatholicTV is featuring a series of 'Lifelines' with Carolee McGrath. Here are the first two in a series of short reflections by Carolee.

Pro-Life Music Video by Jaime Thietten Now Viewable at CatholicTV.com

CatholicTV.com now features a pro-life video by Christian artist Jaime Thietten. Jaime has been singing her whole life and has shared the stage with celebrities such as Glen Frey of The Eagles and Jay Leno. Her song “My Chance” tells the heart-wrenching story of a mother who decides to have an abortion, but later regrets her decision. The video is available at http://www.catholictv.com/shows/default.aspx?seriesID=81&videoID=819

CatholicTV is a nationally-broadcasted television network headquartered near Boston. CatholicTV streams its broadcast simultaneously, 24 hours a day at www.CatholicTV.com

Jaime has dedicated part of her career to help bring awareness to the value of human life from the time of conception. She also helped to produce a video accompanying “My Chance” which includes interviews and information about life-saving options such as adoption.

"So many children lose their lives everyday," Jaime says. "People have asked me why I would want to tackle such a controversial subject at this time in my musical career. My answer is that we can't afford to wait. Lives need to be saved now. I'm not worried about what others think."

“My Chance" received the “Song of the Year” in March at this year's Momentum Award ceremonies in Nashville on March 28. This is a second win in this category for Jaime, who received Song of the Year for "Reckless Love" in 2007, along with 2007 Female Vocalist of the Year.

In June of 2009 Jaime learned that that "My Chance" had gained another #1 award. The song won the Grand Prize of $5000 and #1 position in the overall Music Finals in the fan-voted OurStage.com music competition for May 2009. For more information please visit: http://www.jtmusic.net

About Jaime Thietten:

As an artist of faith, Jaime challenges us to look past the limitations of our humanity such as denomination, background and appearances which only create divisive relationships built on the fear of differences. Through her music she encourages us to see the Love, Grace and Mercy of Jesus, and that we are called to be as one through Christ. Her desire is to lift up, in hope and forgiveness, those who are hurting, alone and afraid.

During her 10-year singing career, Thietten has used her soaring soprano voice to garner radio airplay around the world, win major industry awards, and share stages with acts such as Phillips, Craig & Dean, Avalon, the Gaithers, Michael English, Clay Walker, Seventh-Day Slumber, and many others. She currently worships at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Murfreesboro, TN where her husband Pete Espil is the Director of Youth Ministries.

The religious order “Sisters of Life” follows the Augustinian rule, and was founded in 1991 by John Cardinal O'Connor, the late Archbishop of New York, after much prayer and a visit to the remains of the Dachau concentration camp. The order is both contemplative and active. Besides taking the traditional vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the sisters take a fourth vow to protect and enhance the sacredness of human life. The sisters live in community, centering their lives on the Eucharist. They have five convents in New York and a retreat house in Connecticut. Their work includes a pregnancy help Visitation Mission, a Holy Respite for pregnant women, the Stanton Library with pro-life resources, the Family Life/Respect Life Office in the Archdiocese of New York, and retreat opportunities for youth, married couples, families, and “Entering Canaan” retreats for men and women suffering after abortion. On Tuesday, September 1st, the Superior General of the Sisters of Life, Mother Agnes Mary Donovan will be featured in a live interview on the CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”. Mother Agnes is a licensed clinical psychologist and a certified school psychologist. Mother Agnes has a PhD in psychology from the University of North Carolina. George Weigel, author of “Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II” called Mother Agnes’ book “essential reading for all those, whatever their vocation, who take seriously the universal call to holiness.”

The Sisters of Life is a contemplative / active religious community of women founded in 1991 by John Cardinal O’Connor for the protection and enhancement of the sacredness of every human life. In addition to the three traditional vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the Sisters of Life are also consecrated under a special, fourth vow to protect and enhance the sacredness of human life.

The book “The Foundations of Religious Life: Revisiting the Vision” consists of essays written by six religious sisters representing five different orders. The Pro-Life License Plate Battle Hits Television

On Tuesday, June 16th, in a television interview, Merry Nordeen, a pro-life activist, will discuss her battle to bring pro-life license plates to her home state of Massachusetts. She will discuss this issue on “This Is The Day”.

Ever since Merry Nordeen read about the “Choose Life” license plate, she wanted one of her own and has worked tirelessly ever since to introduce “Choose Life” license plates to Massachusetts. She and her fellow supporters need about 1500 people to register for “Choose Life” license plates, which cost $40 a piece. To an outside observer, this task appears easy given that the Mrs. Nordeen is appealing largely to Catholics. Massachusetts population consists of 47% Catholics which translates to about 3 million people. Other states with a fraction of that number of Catholics such as Arkansas, and Alabama already offer “Choose Life” license plates. These were made available largely due to the efforts of pro-life activists and pro-active Catholic motorists.

“Over 400,000 “Choose Life” license plates have been sold, and have raised over $10 million dollars to help women.” said the Texas Catholic Conference at txcatholic.org.

Few Catholics realize that many pro-life activists had to spend months and even years appealing to legislators to allow for “Choose Life” license plates.

In Massachusetts, only 614 people have registered for the plates and about 900 more are needed by June 30, 2009. (source: www.machoose-life.org). Merry will talk about her cause and her struggles during her interview on “This Is The Day”. Interested parties can learn more by visiting www.machoose-life.org. “Choose Life” activists believe that the license plates, like most prominently displayed messages, have the power to influence.

One pro-life activist, Gaby Federico of El Paso, Texas, said “I have a middle school-aged friend whose mother decided against having an abortion after answering an advertisement in the phonebook. My friend is alive largely because of that phonebook ad.”

Also featured on Tuesday’s episode of “This Is The Day” will be Dr. Wes Ely, a pro-life activist from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Ely is the faculty adviser to 2 pro-life organizations. One is Catholic: the Society of Saints Cosmas and Damian and the other is a non-denominational group founded by a Catholic. Dr. Ely's research has focused on improving the care and outcomes of critically ill patients with severe sepsis and respiratory failure, with special emphasis on the problems facing older patients in the ICU.

These guests can be seen on Tuesday, June 16th live at 10:30AM (EST) on CatholicTV where available (rebroadcast at 8PM). The show will also be streamed live at www.CatholicTV.com

CatholicTV to Air Controversial Films on Abortion and Euthanasia on Internet and Television

Starting in May, we will be airing 2 short films on abortion and euthanasia. The film about abortion entitled “Crossroads of the Heart” is a compilation of testimonies from people involved in crisis pregnancies. Interviewees include Alveda King (niece of Martin Luther King Jr.) and 3-time Olympic Gold Medalist Josh Davis. Both King and Davis were involved in crisis pregnancies.

The other controversial film is called “Turning the Tide”, a short film on another hot topic- euthanasia. The film features Bobby Schindler (brother of Terri Schiavo), as well as many others.

Crossroads of the Heart

“Crossroads of the Heart” is a unique film because it features testimony from real women and men who have been affected by crisis pregnancies and abortion. Despite the fact that nearly 50,000,000 abortions have been performed since 1973, television and cable stations rarely air interviews of the women, men, and children affected by abortion.

The 20-minute film is hosted by Jennifer Coker who faced an unplanned pregnancy at the age of 18. The film offers testimony from over half a dozen women. The women begin with how they felt immediately after discovering they were pregnant all the way to after their abortions (for those who decided to abort). They even discussed how some of them were mislead at clinics, where some clinic employees hid ultrasounds images from them or failed to inform them of the risks of abortion.

Olympic swimmer Josh Davis also discusses how his parents conceived him out of wedlock and ultimately decided to have him. He speaks of his joy of swimming in the Olympics and of life in general.

Turning the Tide

Most Americans are familiar with the case of Terri Schiavo, who was in a vegetative state and later died after her feeding tube was removed in 2005. In 2004, Pope John Paul II stated that health care providers are morally bound to provide food and water to patients in persistent vegetative states.

“Turning the Tide” discusses euthanasia, assisted suicide and the legal ramifications of legislation of these acts. Several experts discuss the topic, including Canadian Senator Sharon Carstairs (former Chair of the Senate Committee on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide). Turning the Tide is a powerful documentary which looks at the concepts of compassion, dignity, quality of life, personal autonomy and choice, and explores how the law works in shaping a society.

The 2 shows will air back to back from May 13th to May 17th at the following times (Eastern): May 13th- 4PM; May 14th-6:30AM; May 16th-10:30AM; and May 17th-2AM.

“Crossroads of the Heart” will air again during the week of June 24th to June 28th at these times: June 24th-5AM; June 26th-8AM; June 28th-11PM.

CatholicTV To Air New Episodes of "The Future Depends on Love"

Starting in March, CatholicTV will air new episodes of the show on marriage called “The Future Depends on Love.” The new episodes will feature a variety of guests.

Here is a list of the guests and themes of the new episodes which will start in March.

March 2- Erika Bachiochi: Marriage and Social Justice
March 9- Father Mark O’Connell: The Metropolitan Tribunal and Annulments
March 16- Katie Dardis: Healthy Marriage Begins with Chastity
March 23- Bishop Robert Hennessey: Marriage and Immigrant Vitality
March 30- Marianne Luthin and Allison LeDoux: Project Rachel - Healing Families After the Trauma of Abortion

The show is hosted by Dr. David and Dr. Angela Franks who are both professors at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, MA. With divorce statistics higher than ever and teenage pregnancy rates up for the first time in 15 years (source:CNN.COM), Catholic parents and young people are concerned about the messages that Catholics receive from the media and their friends regarding sexuality and marriage.

In response, the Catholic bishops of Massachusetts, being well aware of the rise in divorce, sexual immorality, adultery, and abortion began a new initiative from which this television show sprung forth.

The show is viewable each week on Monday-5:30P.M., Tuesday-1:30P.M., Wednesday-3:30A.M., Thursday 11:30A.M., 8:00P.M., and Sunday-3:30P.M.
