John Paul II International Film Festival to Be Discussed on CatholicTV

On Tuesday, August 11th, the John Paul II (JPII) International Film Festival will be discussed on the CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”. “This is the Day” will feature the organizers of the festival in an interview. The JPII Film Festival was organized in response to Pope JPII’s call to the “new evangelization”. Before becoming Pope, JPII was an actor and playwright who believed in using the arts to express the glory of God.

Also on “This is the Day” will be iconographer Marek Czarnecki who will discuss how Catholics can learn more about their faith through images of Jesus, Mary, and the saints.

In 1999, “The Great” Pope JPII wrote a letter to artists everywhere. He asked them to be witnesses to the Truth and invited them to take part in what he called “The New Evangelization”. This year, filmmakers from around the world will unite into one festival to answer that call.

After the enormous success of films like The Passion of the Christ, Bella, and Fireproof, it became clear that the hunger for faith-based films is prominent and desires to be fulfilled. Organizers of the JPII Film Festival believe “the world is in need of Truth– the truth about love, who we are, what we’re called for, and WHO we come from. We are all deeply hoping to be reminded about the truth of our humanity.” More information on the film festival can be obtained by visiting: www.jp2filmfestival.com/blog/. The television interview will feature the founders of the JPII Film Festival- Laura Alvarado, Rafael Anrrich, and Frank Brennan.

Also featured on “This is the Day” will be iconographer Marek Czarnecki. Mr. Czarnecki studies under Russian Orthodox iconographer Mrs. Ksenia Pokrovsky, within the Izograph School which she founded in Moscow.

Mr. Czarnecki’s icons can be found in the homes and chapels of individuals, as well as churches across the country, including the Franciscan University of Steubenville, and the Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, IL. Mr. Czarnecki has been featured in numerous articles, exhibits, and videos. He continues to teach and write about icons out of his studio in Meriden, Connecticut.

Steve Ray and Fr. Roger Landry Will Be Interviewed On CatholicTV Talk Show

On July 31st, Steve Ray will be featured in an interview on the CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”. Also featured on the show will be Fr. Roger Landry, a Harvard-educated priest who will discuss “Becoming a Real Man of God”. In his writings, Fr. Landry discusses masculinity and addresses the problems of same-sex marriage.

Steve Ray, a.k.a. “Jerusalem Jones” was a Protestant for 37 years until he and his wife converted to the Catholic faith in 1994. Since then, Mr. Ray has produced numerous documentaries and programs promoting the Catholic faith. He has also conducted several successful conferences in conjunction with other Catholic converts. He is a regular guest on many radio and television programs. Mr. Ray has also written several books including “Crossing the Tiber: Evangelical Protestants Discover the Historic Church”. Mr. Ray hosts a program called “Defenders of the Faith” each week on CatholicTV. Click here to view the show schedule:

The in-studio guest for “This is the Day” will be Fr. Roger Landry. Fr. Landry is the Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church in New Bedford, MA. He studied biology at Harvard and also studied Theology and Bioethics at the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family in Rome. On “This is the Day”, Fr. Landry will discuss “Becoming a Real Man of God”. In these writings, Fr. Landry touches on several hot topics. Speaking of the problems of same-sex marriage, Fr. Landry wrote that, “as the push for same-sex marriage becomes stronger, marriage is conceived as a potentially man-less or woman-less institution, one in which a husband or a wife is optional rather than required.”

This September, CatholicTV will air Fr. Landry’s television series on John Paul II’s teachings on the Theology of the Body.

These guests can be seen on Friday, July 31st live at 10:30AM (EST) on CatholicTV where available (rebroadcast at 8PM). The show will also be streamed simultaneously at www.CatholicTV.com and will be available on the site’s archives starting Friday night. All videos at the website are viewable in full-screen. President of Relatively New Catholic College Named After Pope JPII Will Appear on CatholicTV

Dr. Derry Connolly, President of John Paul the Great Catholic University (JP Catholic) will be featured in an interview on CatholicTV.

JP Catholic is one of the newest Catholic universities in America. It is located in San Diego, CA.

Dr. Connolly is one of the original founders of JP Catholic and was originally inspired to start a university after witnessing 1000 students attend Mass at Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH. “These kids were absolutely on fire for their faith.” recalled Connolly in an interview posted on online.

Connolly had recently read the words of the president of a well-known Catholic university which said, “a great Catholic university had to be first a great university -and then Catholic.”
“Pope John Paul II would say that to be a great Catholic university, you have to be first a great Catholic organization and then secondly a great university.” said Connolly in the same interview (The Weight of Glory Blog).

Inspired by the faith of the students in Steubenville and a desire to start a quality school which would be faithful to Catholic teaching, Connolly and other co-founders started JP Catholic. Classes began in 2006. The first class will graduate in December 2009.

Speaking of the requirements of theology faculty, Dr. Connolly said, “The teachers have to be standing on platforms in the community saying, for example, that embryonic stem cell research is not consistent with Catholic teaching. They have to align themselves with the Church on issues facing people in the media and in technology in the community. They must be highly visible Catholic spokespersons.”

Also featured on “This is the Day” will be Joseph Curto, founder of Catholics for Christ- an organization designed to evangelize different people at different spiritual levels using evangelistic meetings, missions, retreats, and seminars.

Mr. Curto has spoken hundreds of times, helping Catholics deepen their personal relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Currently a parishioner at St Francis de Sales in Purcellville,Virginia, Joe has served on the Pastoral council for 3 years and currently conducts a weekly Adult Bible Study, and facilitates the St. Francis de Sales Charismatic Prayer Group “Refuge.” In addition, Joe serves the Diocese of Arlington as a board member of Charismatic Renewal Service Committee (CRSC).
