Nursing Students Will Discuss How to Prevent Falling on CatholicTV Talk Show

According to a recent study, falls and fall-related injuries have been the leading cause of injury deaths among older adults. Because of this, 2 students from Connell School of Nursing at Boston College , Kristin Stobo and Kathleen Manly, will appear on the CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day” on April 13th to discuss various methods to prevent falls.

This is the Day airs at 10:30AM ET at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV. The show is rebroadcast at 7:30PM.

Studies show that balance, flexibility, and strength training not only improve mobility, but also reduce the risk of falling. Statistics show that most older adults do not exercise regularly, and 35% of people over the age of 65 do not participate in any leisure physical activity.

Also being interviewed on This is the Day will be Fr. Vito Buonanno. Fr. Vito, a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn, is the Director of Pilgrimages at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. He will discuss pilgrimages at the Basilica, which is the largest Catholic Church in North America and one of the 10 largest churches in the world. It is a National Marian Shrine and pilgrimage Church dedicated to Mary and peoples from countries around the world. It has over 70 chapels and oratories . CatholicTV airs a program "Gospel in Mosaic" which was recorded at the National Shrine.

Mass of Thanksgiving in Honor of Canonization of St. Damien of Molokai Will Air on CatholicTV From National Basilica

On January, 31st, CatholicTV will air the Mass of Thanksgiving honoring the recent canonization of St. Damien of Molokai, a priest known for working with lepers in Hawaii. This Mass will take place at The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

This Mass will air on CatholicTV and CatholicTV.com at 3:30PM (Eastern) on January 31st, and will rebroadcast at noon the following day.

CatholicTV recently aired a memorial Mass celebrating the 30th anniversary of the death of Servant of God Archbishop Fulton Sheen. CatholicTV also aired a thanksgiving Mass in honor of the canonization of St. Jeanne Jugan. Both of these Masses are available in the CatholicTV.com archives at http://www.CatholicTV.com/shows/default.aspx?seriesID=111

St. Damien was a Catholic priest from Belgium and member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, a missionary religious order. He won recognition for his ministry to people with leprosy (known as Hansen's disease), who had been placed under a government-sanctioned medical quarantine on the island of Molokai in the Kingdom of Hawaii.

After sixteen years caring for the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of those in the leper colony, he eventually contracted and died of the disease, and is widely considered a "martyr of charity". He is the ninth person recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church to have lived, worked, and died in what is now the United States.

50th Anniversary Mass for America’s Largest Church Will Be Celebrated on CatholicTV

The National Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. will celebrate the closing of its Jubilee Year, as it did the dedication in 1959, with a Triduum, “three day”, celebration. This will begin on Thursday, November 19th with the Plenary Mass of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops at 5PM EST. This Mass will air live at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV. The chief celebrant will be Archbishop Donald Wuerl. Bishop Michael J. Bransfield of Wheeling-Charleston, former director/rector of the Basilica from 1986-2005, will be the homilist.

Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, will play a special role at the Mass, reading the letter from Pope John XXIII addressed to the bishops of the United States (read then by the Most Reverend Egidio Vagnozzi, Apostolic Delegate to the United States) on the occasion of the dedication of the National Shrine on November 20, 1959. Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, and Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, will concelebrate the Mass with over 40 other bishops from across the United States.

CatholicTV produced an original mini-series inside of the National Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception starring Archbishop Donald Wuerl in 2009. In this mini-series, Archbishop Wuerl discusses the Rosary, using the beautiful mosaics of the Basilica to illustrate his points. Washington Archbishop Uses National Shrine’s Domes & Mosaics to Teach Gospel on CatholicTV

Starting in July, CatholicTV will air a 3-part series called “Gospel in Mosaic” in which Washington’s Archbishop Donald Wuerl teaches viewers about the gospel and the Rosary using the intricate domes and mosaics in the National Shrine. Also in July, CatholicTV’s travel show “Catholic Destinations” will include a 2-part special on the National Shrine including detailed video footage.

The National Shrine is also known as The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

According to Wikipedia, the National Shrine “is the largest Catholic church in the United States, the eighth largest religious structure in the world, and the tallest building in Washington, D.C. An estimated one million pilgrims from around the country and the world visit the basilica each year.”

The basilica houses an incredible 70 chapels honoring Mary. Many of these chapels will be explored on the show “Catholic Destinations”. The main seating area of the Basilica is surrounded by chapels which have images of well-known Marian apparitions such as Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, and many others. These chapels in the main seating area all contain beautiful mosaics which are rarely seen in the modern churches in the United States.

The “Catholic Destinations” episodes featuring the Basilica will include commentary about the history of the Basilica from then-rector of the Basilica Monsignor Michael Bransfield.

In the 3-part series called “Gospel in the Mosaic”, Archbishop Wuerl discusses the Gospel and the rosary while using the various domes of the Basilica as reference points. For instance, Archbishop Wuerl discusses the nativity, Jesus’ first miracle at Cana, and the transfiguration while cameras display the Incarnation Dome of the Basilica.
