Superior General of Sisters of Life to be Featured in Interview on CatholicTV

On Tuesday, September 1st, the Superior General of the Sisters of Life, Mother Agnes Mary Donovan will be featured in a live interview on the CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”. Mother Agnes is a licensed clinical psychologist and a certified school psychologist. Mother Agnes has a PhD in psychology from the University of North Carolina. She will discuss the book she co-authored called “The Foundations of Religious Life: Revisiting the Vision”. George Weigel, author of “Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II” called Mother Agnes’ book “essential reading for all those, whatever their vocation, who take seriously the universal call to holiness.”

The Sisters of Life is a contemplative / active religious community of women founded in 1991 by John Cardinal O’Connor for the protection and enhancement of the sacredness of every human life. In addition to the three traditional vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the Sisters of Life are also consecrated under a special, fourth vow to protect and enhance the sacredness of human life.

The book “The Foundations of Religious Life: Revisiting the Vision” consists of essays written by six religious sisters representing five different orders. The topics they address are: religious consecration, the spousal bond, the threefold response to the vows, communion in community, and mission.

Also on the talk show “This is the Day” on September 1st will be Matthew Boerke, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, Utah. Matthew recently worked at a large Catholic youth camp in Brighton, UT. “The purpose of the camp was to build Catholic community,” said Matthew in an interview with “Intermountain Catholic”.

New Show About the Old Testament Prophets to Debut on CatholicTV in September

Starting in September, CatholicTV will air a new show entitled “The Prophets and You”. This new show is hosted by Dr. John Clabeaux. Dr. Clabeaux earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University and is an associate professor of Sacred Scripture at Pontifical College Josephinum School of Theology in Columbus, OH.

Dr. Clabeaux says that “Who the prophets were is essential to Christian identity because as believers we are called to be prophets ourselves.”

Installation Mass of Archbishop Gregory Aymond of New Orleans to Air on CatholicTV

On August 30th, CatholicTV will air the Installation Mass of Archbishop Gregory Aymond. Archbishop Aymond will be installed as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of New Orleans on August 20th. He is the first New Orleans native named to head the Archdiocese of New Orleans in its 216-year history. Once broadcast on CatholicTV, the Installation Mass will be added to the CatholicTV.com archives and will be viewable in full-screen and free of charge.

Aymond was Bishop of the Diocese of Austin, Texas before returning home to his new assignment.

In a recent interview, Archbishop Aymond said, "Even as I returned to New Orleans for vacations and to visit family and friends, never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be back here as archbishop and doing ministry as the shepherd of this church, but I accept that responsibility knowing that I will depend on God and God's help. … I promise to stay close to the Lord in order that I can fulfill my episcopal ministry faithfully."

The Diocese of Austin grew rapidly (partly as a result of immigration) during Aymond's bishopric and actually had more churchgoers than many archdioceses, including New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Archbishop Aymond is thought to be an effective recruiter of people to church vocations. The Austin Diocese web site indicated that during his nine years of leading the diocese the number of seminarians increased threefold.

Archbishop Aymond is a pro-life supporter and "was one of more than 80 United States bishops who wrote to the University of Notre Dame (in South Bend, Indiana) to protest its award of an honorary degree to President Barack Obama".

Traveling Museum Exhibit Starring Catholic Sisters to Be Discussed on This is the Day

On Friday, August 28th, “Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America” a traveling museum exhibit, will be discussed on the CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”. The exhibit, which will be shown in the Smithsonian and across the nation, highlights little known facts about American sisters and their history in the U.S. These include the story of how since 1980, at least nine American sisters have been martyred while working overseas. Few people are aware that more than 110 U.S. colleges and universities were founded by Catholic sisters. Sr. Helen Garvey, BVM will discuss the exhibit on the set of “This is the Day”.

The Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America (Women in Spirit) exhibit opened in Spring 2009 at Cincinnati Museum Center and will travel nationwide for a 3-year tour with stops at Ellis Island and the Smithsonian.

"Women & Spirit" showcases numerous artifacts which have never before been on public display. Items assembled from over 400 communities include a handwritten letter from Thomas Jefferson, a cradle from the NY foundlings, and a replica of the first incubator along with traveling trunks, journals of immigration experiences, pioneering healthcare devices, diaries, samplers, musical instruments, student work, and ephemera associated with a number of saints. A total of 70 objects will be displayed at each venue.

5th Season of Catholic Game Show to Air on CatholicTV

Starting in September 2009, CatholicTV will air the 5th season of its Catechetical game show “Wow!-The CatholicTV Challenge”.

Wow! The CatholicTV Challenge (Wow!) is a children’s game show that teaches viewers the Catholic faith. The show resembles the show Jeopardy!, yet has young contestants just like the show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” Wow! is hosted by Father Robert Reed, a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston. Contestants are 3rd graders and are asked open-ended questions. Father Reed gives a brief explanation of the answer and occasional commentary. The show erupts with laughter and shouts of “Wow!” when contestants answer questions correctly. Each show has a Catholic theme such as “The Sacraments” or “The 10 Commandments”.

The new season will have shows centered around: the resurrection, the Gospels, the Roman Pontiff, The Anointing of the Sick, and others.

In addition to free television programs at iTunes, CatholicTV also streams its broadcast live at CatholicTV.com. Catholics can view this online broadcast anytime for free and without obligation. The broadcast can be viewed in full-screen. CatholicTV is a non-profit company and relies largely on private donations for its operations.

Deacon, Ph.D., and Golf Coach to Appear on "This is the Day"

On Tuesday, August 25th, Deacon Curtis Turner will be featured on the CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”. Deacon Turner is principal of a 181-year-old Catholic High School founded by Servant of God, Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange. Deacon Turner has a doctorate in Science Education and is coach of the school golf team. St. Frances Academy is the oldest historically African-American Catholic school in the United States.

Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange founded the first congregation of women religious of African ancestry and was founder of St. Frances Academy.

Dr. Curtis Turner began serving as St. Frances Academy (located in Baltimore) principal on June 2nd, 2008. Dr. Turner has worked in secondary education since 1993 in public and Catholic high schools. He is a graduate of DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland and Howard University in Washington, DC where he earned a bachelors degree in physics. Dr. Turner earned a master and a doctorate degree in science education from the University of Massachusetts - Amherst. In addition to his administrative duties, Dr. Turner teaches mathematics and coaches golf at St. Frances Academy. He is a Non-resident Associate Member of the Oblate Sisters of Providence and an ordained permanent deacon for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington in 2008. He is married and lives in Howard County.

Established in 1828, St. Frances Academy is an independent Catholic high school with African-American and Hispanic roots.

“This is the Day” airs live twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m.) Father Robert Reed and Jay Fadden host this half-hour talk show with Kevin Nelson. The hosts discuss various topics of the week and respond to viewer mail. The show includes interviews, cooking, music, news and events for today's Catholic.

Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention Now Viewable Online At CatholicTV.com

The original CatholicTV broadcast of the Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention in Phoenix is now available in its entirety at CatholicTV.com. The convention took place on August 4th and was a joint production between CatholicTV and Salt and Light Television, a Canadian Catholic television network.

CatholicTV’s web archives include most of the events during the Knights of Columbus 127th Supreme Convention including the entire opening Mass, the States Dinner, and interviews with commentary throughout. Also included, are talks by several Bishops and Cardinals including Cardinal Francis George of Chicago.
