Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention to Be Televised Live on CatholicTV

CatholicTV will air events occurring during the Knights of Columbus 127th Supreme Convention, live from Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday, Aug. 4. The broadcast will begin with the live Mass at 12:30 p.m (all times Eastern). The broadcast will continue with the live Opening Session at 4 p.m. and will end with the live State’s Dinner at 10:30 p.m. (90 min.). Rebroadcasts will take place. The State’s Dinner will include a keynote presentation by Cardinal Francis George of Chicago.

The liturgy will be celebrated by Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix. As host ordinary, he will also be the homilist. There are typically 70 cardinals/bishops and as many priests who concelebrate the Mass, which should last approximately 90 minutes.

The convention brings together Knights from all over the nation. The convention will include business sessions and the annual report of activities which the Knights have been engaged in throughout the year. Of particular interest is the Fatherhood initiative and program, Fathers for Good, which was announced by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson at last year’s Supreme Convention in Quebec City, Canada. The new program is a 21st Century evolution of the organization's long tradition of building better marriages and stronger families. A special website for the initiative, www.fathersforgood.org was launched one year ago and has provided family, spiritual, and informational guidance to families.

To honor and recognize the contributions of the Knights of Columbus, CatholicTV will broadcast special presentations featuring the Knights and productions which the Knights have supported. These will include “Fishers of Men” and a 5 part award-winning documentary on vocations to marriage, religious life, vocation of the laity, and the priesthood. Also a newly produced program called “Crowning Achievement”- a program that follows the restoration of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT, birthplace of the Knights of Columbus will also air on CatholicTV.

All of this can be seen live at CatholicTV.com and also on CatholicTV in available areas.

About the Knights of Columbus:

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal organization with 1.75 million members throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Poland and a number of other countries. Annually, Knights of Columbus donate more than $143 million to charity and volunteer more than 64 million hours to their parishes and communities. The organization was founded in 1882 by the Venerable Servant of God Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being considered by the Vatican.

Servants of God Fulton Sheen, Cardinal Nguyễn Văn Thuận, and Patrick Peyton on CatholicTV in August

Servant of God Fulton Sheen and Cardinal Nguyễn Văn Thuận will be featured on CatholicTV during the week of August 3rd to August 9th. CatholicTV will air an interview of Cardinal Nguyễn by another Servant of God, Father Patrick Peyton, CSC. CatholicTV will also air a documentary on the life of Cardinal Nguyễn, who as Coadjutor Archbishop was imprisoned for 13 years in Vietnam. In addition, CatholicTV will air an interview of Bishop Fulton Sheen by Father Patrick Peyton.

Fulton Sheen was known for his preaching and especially his work on television and radio. His cause for canonization was officially opened in 2002. For twenty years, he hosted the night-time radio programme “The Catholic Hour” (1930-1950) before moving to television and presenting “Life Is Worth Living” (1951-1957) Sheen's final presenting role was on the syndicated “The Fulton Sheen Program” (1961-1968) with a format very similar to that of the earlier “Life is Worth Living show”. For this work, Sheen won an Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality.

Cardinal Nguyễn Văn Thuận was the nephew of South Vietnam’s first president and later became Coadjutor Archbishop. In 1975, the communists took over South Vietnam and Cardinal Nguyen was imprisoned for 13 years. Despite 9 years in solitary confinement, Cardinal Nguyễn was able to celebrate Mass secretly by using drops of wine and tiny hosts smuggled inside of a flashlight. While in prison, a guard asked Cardinal Nguyễn if he would seek revenge against the guard after his release. Cardinal Nguyễn told the guard “no” and that he loved him despite the way he was treated. Cardinal Nguyễn was named on lists of possible successors to Pope John Paul II before Cardinal Nguyễn’s death from cancer in 2002.

CatholicTV presents these programs in honor of the Year for Priests. These interviews and documentaries are parts of 2 regular blocks of programming at CatholicTV. The documentary on the life of Cardinal Văn Thuận will air during the programming block “CatholicTV Presents”. This block airs each week at the following times (Eastern): Monday-2PM; Tuesday-10PM; Wednesday-4PM; Thursday 6:30AM; Friday-9PM; Saturday 10:30AM; Sunday-2AM.

This hour-long programming block airs each week during the following times: Tuesday-11:30AM; Wednesday-5AM; Friday-8AM; Sunday-10:30PM. These shows will air during the week of August 3rd-9th.

Steve Ray, a.k.a. “Jerusalem Jones” was a Protestant for 37 years until he and his wife converted to the Catholic faith in 1994. Since then, Mr. Ray has produced numerous documentaries and programs promoting the Catholic faith. He has also conducted several successful conferences in conjunction with other Catholic converts. Landry will discuss “Becoming a Real Man of God”. In these writings, Fr. Landry touches on several hot topics. Speaking of the problems of same-sex marriage, Fr. Landry wrote that, “as the push for same-sex marriage becomes stronger, marriage is conceived as a potentially man-less or woman-less institution, one in which a husband or a wife is optional rather than required.”

This September, CatholicTV will air Fr. Landry’s television series on John Paul II’s teachings on the Theology of the Body.

These guests can be seen on Friday, July 31st live at 10:30AM (EST) on CatholicTV where available (rebroadcast at 8PM). Texas and Oregon Musicians Featured on CatholicTV

On Tuesday, July 28th, CatholicTV will feature 2 Catholic musicians on the talk show “This is the Day”. One of the guests is Gabe Rivera, a 29-year-old Catholic actor, and musician, who is on a promotional tour for the film “Red Mesa” which he stars in. Gabriel Rivera will be an in-studio guest on ”This is The Day”. Gabriel is a native of El Paso, Texas and has been writing, recording, and performing music since 1994. In 2007, Gabriel made his feature film debut in a film by Ethan Hawke. Currently, Gabriel stars in “Red Mesa”, a 35mm film in which he plays the lead role of “Octavio”. “Advocating for justice for immigrants is an important part of my ministry, and this film allows me to show the plight of the immigrant in this great country.”

In addition to promoting the movie this summer, Gabriel will be touring in support of his debut full-length recording, “Songs From a Brown Boy’s Heart” The album is a collection of bilingual songs, and speaks of Gabriel’s spiritual journey. Ken recently assumed the responsibilities of Managing Editor for spiritandsong.com.

Unlike most contemporary Catholic artists, Ken does not sing. Although he was a cantor in high school, he lost most of his hearing and his voice as he got older. “This used to depress me a lot, until I realized I could write songs for others to sing,” said Ken. He also makes himself available for any of his spiritandsong friends who might need him as a bass player for their concerts and appearances.

Ken will be discussing his newly released book, "Keep the Fire Burning: The Folk Mass Revolution" The book is more than just about folk music. It's about the Second Vatican Council, the transition in the liturgy from Latin to English, and the experiences of the Catholic Church in America during the 1960s. To learn more about the book visit www.KenCanedo.com. Keep the Fire Burning was recently reviewed by Susan Bailey of Grapevine Music , The review may be read at the following website: http://gvcatholicmusicreviews.blogspot.com/2009/07/book-review-keep-fire-burning.html
