Old Testament Resolutions in 2014

Happy New Year!

January 2nd is a good day to talk about New Year's resolutions. Most of us are back to work or school and our ability to make changes for the year is far more realistic. So what does 2014 hold for us as Christians, Catholics and seekers of God? Losing ten pounds? Working out? Quitting smoking? Maybe. Are these the things that the Lord requires of us? Maybe, but let's not let the demands of culture dictate our resolutions this year. Let's look to the Lord.

Only in God do we fine newness and truth. When we look to God to effect conversion in our lives, we cannot be disappointed. That's our problem every year. We try to change ourselves to be better in the eyes of society, instead of turning ourselves over to God to be changed into something pleasing in the eyes of the Lord.

So what does God require of us in the new year? We don't need to look any further than the Scriptures.

Micah 6:8 (NRSV) says:
He has told you, O mortal, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?
The New International Version translates it as "to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God", and that translation may be more familiar to you. Let's think about some resolutions based on these three simple requirements of God.

Act Justly

In our day to day lives it is easy to not only forget those who are not treated justly in society, but also to forget the part we play in that. This year, identify a group of oppressed people and offer your year to them. Remember them in your prayers and make a real change in their interest.
  • Maybe it is victims of human trafficking and slavery (btw, January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month). Around the world, people are forced into labor to create goods that people thoughtlessly consume (including you and I, sometimes). Women and children are sold into sexual slavery, children in West Africa are sold as slaves to work on chocolate plantations, and entire families in South Asia are held as slaves in collateral against loans.  Boycott companies that you know participate in slavery or forced labor. Buy fair trade and local goods that you can trust. Learn more about slavery in the 21st century.
  • Maybe it's women, children or minorities and immigrants. Support businesses that uphold the interests of the "widow, the orphan and the stranger", those three groups God commands us to serve and protect throughout the Old Testament. Volunteer at a local women's shelter or orphanage, and support just, fair and charitable immigration reform.
  • In addition to major commitments like the above, make some personal changes too. Examine the prejudices in your life. Rid your language of sexism, racism or any other kind of hate. Treat your family justly. Be truthful at school and work. Make a point to give credit where credit is due.

Love Mercy

How can we show mercy to those in our lives? One of the most important ways we love is by showing mercy to people around us. Most people in our lives are aching for mercy, and we can each give it to them.
  • Turn the conflicts in your life over to God, and ask for the grace to forgive. Some hurts are too painful for us to attempt to forgive them on our own, and God offers to take on those burdens. Let go of grudges - especially the ones you can't remember the causes of. Say prayers for people you've spent time and energy resenting.
  • Be understanding when someone is occasionally rude or annoying. Don't let their rudeness result in bitterness from you and thus start a vicious cycle. Just let it go. Who knows, your mercy may help to heal whatever caused them to be rude in the first place.
  • Be fair with your family. Don't disproportionately punish your kids or spouse for wrong doing. Don't be afraid to communicate when something really disappoints you, but let forgiveness and mercy be what dictates your encounters.
  • Spend time in prayer for people who try your patience. Then take that a step further and spend physical time with them as well. Make a point to compliment them. Sometimes people who try our patience are caustic or difficult precisely because they have been rejected by others. Sometimes all they need is a little mercy and acceptance.
  • Stop judging people.

Walk humbly

Probably the most important thing God requires of us is humility. God so loved us that God humbled Godself and took on human form. Jesus' ultimate act of power was one of radical humility: death on a cross. It was through humility that Christ destroyed death and sin; not boasting and arrogance.
  • Part of what gets in the way of humility is our sense of entitlement to certain indulgences. This is where losing ten pounds or quitting smoking may come in. God has given us our bodies so that we will care for and steward them. Out of "pride of ownership" do we abuse them through sloth or gluttony or lust? This year, identify an indulgence that you think gets in the way of your humility (maybe something you give up for Lent year after year?), and try and kick the habit entirely.
  • Is there an area in your life through which you boast your personal circumstances? Perhaps the clothes you wear or the gadgets you use show off your wealth or success. Perhaps your social media account has become less about communication with friends and family and more about sounding off about yourself. Think about that personal area of temptation for you and see if you can counteract it. Can you limit your time on social media, or limit yourself to only one platform? Can you try to shop at second hand stores for part of your wardrobe? Can you limit yourself to one device?
  • We never do anything on our own. Most importantly, of course, we never do anything without God's help. But we also rarely do anything without the help of someone near us. Part of the "American dream" is a type of individualism that boasts starting from nothing and building one's own success. The reality is that this is a myth. We don't build our own successes. We are helped by our parents, our communities, our parishes and our local and state government. When we achieve something at work or at school, we almost always have someone else to thank for that success. Start meditating on your need for other people in all areas of your life. And when you're praised for your successes, start sharing the credit. You didn't do it alone.

Pilgrims for our future | Rio 2013

World Youth Day approaches, and with it a certain outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our young Catholics. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world are already arriving in Rio, eager to be envigorated in their faith by our truly paternal spiritual leader, Pope Francis.

Teens and young adults are sure to be touched by the experience of oneness and unity they will encounter there. They will have sensory experiences of a diverse, universal Church, and the experience will probably never leave them. The event will be a witness to all people of the true nature of of our pilgrim Church, which seeks to take up the cross and be Christ to a broken world.

Pope Francis has announced that a plenary indulgence will be granted to all who participate in the celebration, even those who participate by internet, radio, or television (under the usual conditions of Confession, reception of the Eucharist, and prayer for the Pope's intention).

In light of the extension of this indulgence to those who participate via media, please join us for our coverage of this inspiring celebration. We'll be covering World Youth Day starting July 22nd with the arrival of the Pope.

Father Reed will be joined by Alexis Grace Richard for desk coverage, and Emily Abi-Kheirs, a local pilgrim, will be our embedded reporter in Rio. Our coverage will be augmented from pictures, tweets, and videos submitted by using the hashtag #CTVWYD13 on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube (so make sure you tell your loved ones who are attending to send us their content!).

We can't wait to bring you coverage of the Masses, the Way of the Cross, and more from World Youth Day. We hope you join us! And we encourage you to go to Confession and receive communion during World Youth Day (7/22-7/28) so you can benefit from the indulgence.

God bless, and see you next week!

We all slip in late to Mass occasionally, and sometimes we even feel the itch to leave early (like right after Communion). So let's hear what Bishop Coyne has to say about arriving late and leaving early to Mass.

Thanks for watching! Check out more of Bishop Coyne's liturgy Blinks.

Forgiveness | A message from Jay

This week I would like to talk about forgiveness. Now, I imagine that most of you can find it in your hearts to forgive someone who has caused you any type of pain. It is not always easy, but a great burden is lifted when you forgive someone and leave the hurt behind. To forgive is a blessing that can heal the world.

But forgiving someone else is not the type of forgiveness that I would like to talk about today. I believe that it is hardest to forgive yourself. In my life I constantly remember things that I may have done or said to someone and wish that I had another opportunity to change decisions that I had made. The guilt that you carry can be like a heavy chain wrapped around you always weighing you down. Much of this comes from caring how your actions may have hurt a person’s feelings. Maybe you were selfish or made a hurtful comment out of anger. Unfortunately it is impossible to reverse what has been done. But through our faith and the beautiful sacrament of confession we know that God forgives us. So we need to understand that if God can forgive us than we should forgive ourselves

What I am saying is please let go of the pain that you can cause yourself by being unable to forgive past transgressions. Reach out to those you may have hurt with love and understanding. Talk to God about your guilt, take a deep breath and live your life in a peaceful way. Forgive yourself and feel the love and comfort of God. You are not alone.

Wisdom from... John

In today's readings we hear from the first letter of John, in which he offers us the ultimate wisdom: remain in the Lord, and reap life from the Lord's annointing.

"Let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is the promise that he made us: eternal life. I write you these things about those who would deceive you. As for you, the anointing that you received from him remains in you, so that you do not need anyone to teach you. But his anointing teaches you about everything and is true and not false; just as it taught you, remain in him." 1 John 2:24-27
John's attention to the dichotomy of deceit and truth in these verses and the verses around them serves to identify the truth with Christ, and deceit with the antichrist. Jesus not only offers us the truth; he is the truth. The truth we heard "from the beginning" must remain in us, but John has already told us (in 1 Jn 1:1) that Jesus is the Word of Life, and the Word (which is also referred to by the Church fathers as the Logos, Wisdom, and Reason itself) is "what was from the beginning". In other words, it is Jesus himself that must remain in us, in addition to the words he has spoken to us, because he is the Word that is spoken.

The CatholicTV® Network to Air Special Coverage During Fortnight for Freedom

The US Bishops have called for “Fortnight for Freedom,” a 14-day period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom, from June 21-July 4. The bishops of the United States have recommended that Catholics focus "all the energies the Catholic community can muster" to heightening people’s awareness of the most cherished liberty: Religious Freedom.

The fourteen days from June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to this “Fortnight for Freedom”. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action emphasizes Christian and American heritage of liberty.

The CatholicTV® Network will participate in the Fortnight for Freedom with special programming from June 21 to July 4, to rally support for the protection of religious freedom in the United States.

Throughout the two week period called for by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Father Robert Reed, president of CatholicTV will offer a daily reflection on the theme of religious freedom in a series of Blinks.

In support of this call to action the CatholicTV® Network has arranged a special hour-long discussion with Cardinal Seán O’Malley and a group of young Catholics in a live forum on the evening of Monday, June 25, 2012 from 8-9PM ET. The event will include a discussion panel, and will be moderated by ClearVoice's John Monahan.

CatholicTV President, Father Robert P. Reed, commented on the Fortnight:
This summer, the bishops of the United States have recommended that we focus "all the energies the Catholic community can muster" to heightening people’s awareness of our most cherished liberty: Religious Freedom. When our freedoms are threatened, we need to speak frankly and with courage and now is such a time... As American citizens, we need to be on guard, for religious liberty is under attack. Join us here on The CatholicTV Network between June 21 and the 4th of July as we celebrate Religious Liberty and pray urgently for a new birth of freedom in our beloved country.

Coverage will be available on CatholicTV and CatholicTV.com. Comments and questions will be addressed LIVE during the event on CatholicTV’s Facebook. Viewers can also join the conversation by tweeting @CatholicTV (#fortnight4freedom). The event will also be simulcast on Relevant Radio across the US and on WQOM in Boston, MA.

Karen Edmisten on This is the Day

On Friday, May 11, 2012, author Karen Edmisten will be featured on the CatholicTV Network’s nationally broadcasted live talk show; This is the Day, to discuss her book, After Miscarriage: A Catholic Woman's Companion to Healing and Hope.

After Miscarriage: A Catholic Woman's Companion to Healing and Hope is a book about grief, healing, and hope after miscarriage. Not afraid to examine the raw emotions that accompany such an experience, the author tells women that they are not alone in reacting strongly, even frighteningly, to their loss and reassures them that hope and healing will come. Having experienced multiple miscarriages herself, Karen shares excerpts from her personal journals, as well as other women's stories, rich quotes about grieving and the healing process, and practical advice. A helpful resource section includes a wide variety of information from both Catholic and secular sources.

Frequent CatholicTV guest Lisa M. Hendey, founder of CatholicMom.com and author of A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms, said,
For every soul who has felt the loss of life through miscarriage or the absence of hope that accompanies infertility, After Miscarriage by Karen Edmisten offers a wellspring of grace. Filled with both the voices of those who have experienced this sacrificial love and helpful resources full of practical insights, Karen's book will be a gift of compassion and healing for many.
Karen is also the author of The Rosary: Keeping Company with Jesus and Mary, and Through the Year with Mary: 356 Reflections, both published by Servant Books. A popular blogger and a regular guest on Relevant Radio, she is also a contributor to Atheist to Catholic: Stories of Conversion.

The CatholicTV® Network to Support the Nationwide Religious Freedom Rally to Oppose the HHS Mandate

The Nationwide Rally for Religious Freedom is being held Friday, March 23, 2012. The theme for the Rally is “Stand Up for Religious Freedom—Stop the HHS Mandate!”

Thousands of Americans of all faiths will be participating in these peaceful rallies, organized by the Pro-Life Action League and Citizens for a Pro-Life Society to oppose the new mandate from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that requires all employers provide free contraceptives, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs through their health plans, even in violation of their consciences.

Religious leaders and other public figures will speak out against the HHS Mandate at each Rally site. Holding signs reading “Stand Up for Religious Freedom” and “Stop the HHS Mandate,” participants will offer hymns and prayers for our nation and pass out literature to the public about why the HHS Mandate is unconstitutional and un-American.

President of the CatholicTV Network, Father Robert Reed, spoke out against the HHS Mandate in support of religious freedom:
I believe that not just Catholics, but all citizens need to oppose the HHS mandate, recognizing the dangerous precedent it would set. The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution, part of the Bill of Rights, prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion. As a result, the mandate would impose a law that contradicts the conscience of many faithful individuals.
Here's Father Reed's official statement on the HHS mandate, as seen on the CatholicTV® Network:

Documentary Which Aired on ABC and Narrated By Martin Sheen Also to Air on CatholicTV- Producer To Discuss on CatholicTV Talk Show

On March 11th, Claire Rung will be interviewed on the CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”. Claire will discuss the documentary “Proving Holiness”, which aired on ABC and was narrated by Martin Sheen. Proving Holiness explores and explains the path to sainthood for four different people, including St. Faustina Kowalska of the Divine Mercy.

Proving Holiness is produced by Daybreak TV (Daybreak) where Claire Rung works as Executive Director.
This is the Day airs at 10:30 a.m. ET at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV cable outlets. The show is rebroadcast at 7:30 p.m. and other times during the week.
Proving Holiness will air at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV during the week of April 25th at the following times: Monday noon Wednesday 5 a.m. Friday 8 a.m.

For expert information, Daybreak’s crew traveled to the Vatican and interviewed members of the congregation for the Cause of Saints and the postulators of the individual causes.

Daybreak also traveled to The Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Krakow, Poland where interviews and footage were videotaped regarding the life of Saint Faustina. The crew also traveled to the U. S. National Shrine of Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts to follow the story of how the veneration of Saint Faustina and The Divine Mercy Message has spread worldwide.

More information about Daybreak TV can be found at http://daybreaktv.org/

Monsignor Charles Murphy will also be interviewed on This is the Day. He is the author of the book “The Spirituality of Fasting”. His book draws on sources ancient and current—from Augustine to Michael Pollan—to consider how fasting informs the relationships between creator/creature, body/soul, and rich/poor.

Pope Benedict had urged that the value and meaning of fasting needed to be "rediscovered and encouraged again in our day," The Spirituality of Fasting is meant for average Catholics and also for small groups, parish retreats, homily preparation, and recommended Lenten reading lists.

Monsignor Charles M. Murphy is the director of the Permanent Diaconate for the Diocese of Portland, Maine. Previously he served his diocese as director of education and has pastored four different parishes. He was rector of the North American College in Rome and holds a doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University there. He is the author of several scholarly articles and books, including Belonging to God: A Personal Training Guide for the Deeper Catholic Spiritual Life.

Private College Which Wants To “Clearly Proclaim” Its Catholic Identity Will Be Discussed on Live CatholicTV Talk Show

On February 8th, the renewal and renaming of The College of Saint Mary Magdalen (CSMM) will be discussed on the live CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”.

Tim Van Damm from CSMM will be interviewed on the set of This is the Day.

“The change in name reflects The College’s desire to clearly proclaim our Catholic identity, to bring greater honor to our patroness, Saint Mary Magdalen, and to stand firmly with The Church in the commitment to the New Evangelization.”, says the CSMM website.

In addition to a new name, The College of Saint Mary Magdalen also renewed the program of studies. George Harne, The College’s Academic Dean stated “we have given Catholic philosophers, theologians, historians, poets, and artists the prominent voice they deserve within any liberal arts program that is worthy of being called Catholic.”

In an interview with The National Catholic Register, CSMM President Jeffrey Karls said, “Through our name change we have sought to place a greater emphasis on our patroness, St. Mary Magdalen, and the original spirit of the college. St. Mary Magdalen had converted to Christ and was the first layperson who witnessed the Resurrection of Christ, addressing him at that first meeting as “Rabboni,” which means “Teacher.” She then became the apostle to the Apostles, announcing the Resurrection.
