From maintenance to mission

The Archdiocese of Boston is in the midst of an exciting and innovative pastoral plan to strengthen the local Church and repropose the gospel. The plan ("Disciples in Mission") "seeks to revitalize the Church in Boston by positioning our parishes more solidly for the task of evangelization, the work of reaching out to our brothers and sisters and drawing them more fully to Christ Jesus." (from the Disciples in Mission proposal).

The pastoral plan (currently in phase one) strengthens local churches by establishing parish collaboratives that function under the leadership of one pastor with the support of Pastoral Teams and Parish Councils. The parishes in the collaboratives maintain their unique identities and responsibilities, while also enjoying the added benefit of a community of support from the other parishes in the collaborative, as well as a unity of vision and evangelical purpose. Parishes maintain the strengths they already have while being fortified by fellow parishes.

By empowering local churches to strengthen and unify as tools for evangelization, the Archdiocese expects that we will move from a state of simply maintaining parishes to being true disciples in mission, proactively spreading the gospel by way of the local Church.

Bishop Deeley, Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Boston, appeared on CatholicTV's This is the Day to talk about the success of the plan so far as pastors in phase one finish up their two week training. He also has some great ideas for how lay people can support the new pastoral plan. Check out his interview below:

Our Retired Priests

Father O'Regan and his sister
It's the week of retired priests at CatholicTV!

Today retired priest Fr O'Regan came all the way from Centerville to celebrate Mass with us. Father O'Regan remembered Monsignor Frank MacFarland in his Mass and for that we are so greatful! Here he is with his sister who joined him for Mass, pictured with Msgr Frank's rosary.

Yesterday we were joined by Fr Cunney who lives over at Regina Cleri, the Archdiocesan residence for retired priests. He was a joy to have and gave a wonderful homily about the significance of fragrant oils, which is perfect for today, the day of the Boston Chrism Mass!

You will see Fr Cunney again on tomorrow's Mass, when Father Reed concelebrates with several priests from Regina Cleri for Spy Wednesday. Watch on CatholicTV and CatholicTV.com LIVE at 9:30am ET, and again at 7pm and 11:30pm.

On Holy Thursday we will premiere a special new Triduum rosary, shot entirely at Regina Cleri, and that will air throughout the Triduum.

Please keep the retired priests of Boston in your prayers! In the Archdiocese of Boston, the Easter collection will be for the sick and retired priests of Boston, and I urge you to consider giving what you can to support these men who have given their lives to serve all of us in the Church.

God bless!

Where is Kevin? | Musings from Rome

Hello to all my blog friends! Well it has been a busy day in Rome.

Father Chris O'Connor from the Archdiocese of Boston is leading a pilgrimage through Poland and Rome.  I had the chance to briefly catch up with them in St. Peter's square and they are a wonderful group.

Aldona, the Director of the Master of Arts and Ministry program is on the pilgrimage as well as students from MAM and the TINE program.  It is clear that they are having a blast.

Father Chris never slows down and they have a full schedule.  I spoke to several of the Pilgrims and one of the first questions they asked was, "where is Kevin?" I found this funny because Kevin asks the same question.  Just kidding Kevin!  (OK, he really does ask that question but I don't want to hurt his feelings.)

After meeting with the pilgrims from Boston, Tim and I were off to the NAC.  We found out that the Cardinals had decided to halt all press conferences so the 2:30 taping was out.  That however did not slow us down.

Thanks to Msgr. Burrill we were able to interview 4 seminarians and a priest who were from different dioceses across the country.  What a group of outstanding young men.  I couldn't help but think that these are the future leaders of the Church.  If that is the case we are in good hands!  Watch for a special with these men soon on the CatholicTV Network.

From the NAC, Tim and I went to St.Peter's for the prayer service.  I told a person from ABC News that Father Reed was supplying commentary for CatholicTV.  I met Terry Donilon and Greg Tracy, and also Angela Flood from the Archdiocese of Washington there by happenstance.

It was a beautiful service and I was struck when I saw 2 nuns kneeling on the stone floor.  There was a great crowd all participating in the service.  Another wonderful day in the very rainy city of Rome.  That is right-- it's pouring, and without an umbrella I am now a soaking mess.  Time to dry off.

Thank you for reading my blog!

Your Friend,

Jay

Pope Benedict's Resignation

We at CatholicTV are lifting Pope Benedict up in prayer as he works through the remaining weeks of his papacy. We profoundly respect the humility of his decision, and our love and prayers are with him.

CatholicTV covered the Boston Catholic Press Conference on Tuesday, and we aired it that night. We'll be airing interviews from the event in the coming weeks, and devoting some of our programming to the ministry of Pope Benedict as we prepare to cover conclave in March.

Missed the press conference? You can watch it right here:

Stay updated on our coverage of the transition over the next few weeks by checking in with us on Twitter and Facebook.

The Bicentennial in full swing!

Catholics of the Archdiocese of Boston began their observance of the 200th anniversary of the archdiocese with a special Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on the first Sunday of Advent. It was very well-attended, with many priests, deacons, religious and faithful representing the parishes of this local Church. The choirs represented the diversity of our archdiocese with the Cathedral Brass Ensemble, the Cathedral Hispanic Choir, the Cathedral Festival Choir and different parish choirs representing the Brazilian, Haitian, Kenyan, Korean and Vietnamese communities.

If you still haven’t had a chance to watch the Mass, you can watch see it on demand at the CatholicTV web site by clicking here. If you would like to simply hear Cardinal Sean’s homily to open this year of celebration, simply click here.

During this bicentennial year, there will be a number of events. One very important initiative is “Arise: Together in Christ,” a program prepared by Renew International that is the cornerstone of our celebration. A new Archdiocesan web page will be launched in the upcoming year, and there is already a site for the bicentennial at http://www.boston200.org/.
