Our Retired Priests

Father O'Regan and his sister
It's the week of retired priests at CatholicTV!

Today retired priest Fr O'Regan came all the way from Centerville to celebrate Mass with us. Father O'Regan remembered Monsignor Frank MacFarland in his Mass and for that we are so greatful! Here he is with his sister who joined him for Mass, pictured with Msgr Frank's rosary.

Yesterday we were joined by Fr Cunney who lives over at Regina Cleri, the Archdiocesan residence for retired priests. He was a joy to have and gave a wonderful homily about the significance of fragrant oils, which is perfect for today, the day of the Boston Chrism Mass!

You will see Fr Cunney again on tomorrow's Mass, when Father Reed concelebrates with several priests from Regina Cleri for Spy Wednesday. Watch on CatholicTV and CatholicTV.com LIVE at 9:30am ET, and again at 7pm and 11:30pm.

On Holy Thursday we will premiere a special new Triduum rosary, shot entirely at Regina Cleri, and that will air throughout the Triduum.

Please keep the retired priests of Boston in your prayers! In the Archdiocese of Boston, the Easter collection will be for the sick and retired priests of Boston, and I urge you to consider giving what you can to support these men who have given their lives to serve all of us in the Church.

God bless!

Boston seminarians

It's so wonderful to be able to see the seminarians from St John's Seminary in Brighton at the station here at CatholicTV. Whether it's to attend Father Reed's class on communication and evangelization in the conference room, or to accompany a priest for Daily Mass, they are welcome visitors!

Today Father Ed Riley celebrated Mass for us, and was joined by Deacon Chris Wallace who will, by the grace of God, be ordained this May. Deacon Chris is a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel parish in Quincy.

Before Mass, Father Reed asked Fr Riley to bless our new vestments for Solemnities, and Deacon Chris joined Fr Riley in being the first to wear them!

Deacon Chris delivered the homily and preached about St Joseph and "actions speaking louder than words". You can watch it right here:

Thanks Deacon Chris and Fr Riley!

Honoring Veterans Day

On Veteran’s Day,  Major Gary Good, a strategic planner for the US Military, will be featured on This is the Day.

Major Good, a strategic planner for the military, was deployed to Afghanistan, leaving his assignment at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. It was while he was deployed that he found God and entered the Church.

Major Good has commended the exceptional job of the Catholic Priests who serve in the military, granting the opportunity to build the faith while in a combat zone.

Major Good comes from a family of several veterans, so we would like to honor Major Good and his family, as well as all who have served in the United States Armed Forces this Veteran’s Day.

Tune in to This is the Day at 10:30AM (ET) on Veterans Day to see Major Gary Good. As always, you can watch it live right here: http://CatholicTV.com

CatholicTV to Support Retired Priests By Airing Special Promotional Videos

In support of retired priests of the Archdiocese of Boston, CatholicTV will air special promotional videos during the month of December.

The videos will remind viewers that “while mandatory retirement age for priests is age 75, many continue to work into their 80’s and beyond.”

In these videos, retired priests make appeals for their “brothers who are senior retired priests.” The videos also say to viewers, “They [priests] were their when we needed them. They are still there for us now. Will we continue to be there for them?”

In the Archdiocese of Boston, a collection is taken up during Christmas Masses to support the retired priests of the Archdiocese. The Archdiocese spends millions of dollars each year housing and assisting in the medical and financial needs of retired priests.

CatholicTV also aired a promotional video encouraging the financial support of retired religious sisters. This video featured Sister Marian Batho, CSJ, a Sister of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint. Joseph.

Annie Karto, Singer of “You Are A Priest Forever” to Be Interviewed on Live CatholicTV Talk Show

On October 12th, Annie Karto, a singer and writer of the song “You Are a Priest Forever” will appear on the live CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”.

Annie Karto has traveled to over 35 states across the country speaking/singing at many national conferences. Annie is passionate about her Catholic faith, sharing this passion through song and witness on such topics as the healing power of God’s mercy, the Blessed Mother, the Eucharist, Catholics returning home, the sacrament of reconciliation, on being a Catholic woman, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

This is the Day airs at 10:30AM ET at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV cable outlets. The show is rebroadcast at 7:30PM and other times during the week.

You are a Priest Forever has touched the hearts of many priests throughout the country. Fr. Andrew Apostoli, CFR wrote, "From the first time I heard Annie Karto's song a few years ago, I felt it had a special anointing from the Lord. Even the unfortunate negative publicity against priests that emerged in early 2002 has only made the song that much more a message of hope and consolation for all loyal Catholics who love their Church and their priests! Every priest, in turn, also needs to hear those reassuring words that Annie sings with such joyful enthusiasm and conviction. "You are a Priest Forever!" as the great Cure of Ars, St. John Vianney, patron saint of diocesan priests, reminds us so well, "The priesthood is the joy of the Heart of Jesus!" You will find this song a joy as well!"

Singing, Piano-Playing, Priest Who Performed For George and Barbara Bush Will Be Interviewed on Live CatholicTV Talk Show

On July 13, Fr. Vern Decoteau, a talented singer, pianist, and parish Pastor, will be interviewed on the live CatholicTV talk show “This the Day”.

Fr. Vern has performed for former President George and Barbara Bush at their home in Kennebunkport, Maine. The Bush’s met Fr. Vern while he was playing at a hotel in Maine.

This is the Day airs at 10:30AM ET at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV. The show is rebroadcast at 7:30PM.

Father Decoteau is a priest of the Diocese of Springfield (MA) and pastor of a Belchertown parish. Fr. Vern has found that his musical talents have been very complimentary to his ministry as a parish priest. Fr. Vern had joked to Barbara Bush that he played to a standing-room-only crowd each week (referring to his parish), after Bush had asked him if he was a professional singer.

Fr. Vern often performs at retirement communities, nursing homes, at parish functions, and of course, at Mass. He is pleased to find that his singing sometimes attracts people who have not been to church in a while.

Fr. Vern has produced several CD’s, including one for the Christmas season and sold enough copies of one CD to pay for a new steeple at his parish.

On June 22nd, Fr. Vern sang, played the piano, and was the featured guest during filming of the show “Going My Way” with host Fr. Chris Hickey and Fr. Paul Rouse. Fr. Vern was the first guest to play the piano on the show in quite some time. This episode will air later this year.

Public Relations for Catholic Priests? Unique Website to Be Discussed on Live CatholicTV Talk Show

On June 25th, a unique website which posts thank you letters to priests will be discussed on the live CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”.

The creators of the website (letterstopriests.com) write that the purpose of the site is to “promote positive public relations of Catholic Priests.” The website publishes stories written by average citizens (anyone can submit stories) who want to thank the priests who have affected their lives in positive ways. The stories range from a heroic, civil rights activist priest, to a priest who expressed tremendous joy even after being imprisoned and tortured in a Nazi concentration camp.

Matthew Warner, a contributing writer at the National Catholic Register wrote a positive review about the site saying that he liked the idea “Since it involves such a diversity of perspectives it has the potential to be a comprehensive collection of unique insights into the various ways priests benefit the community.” Warner also mentioned the tragedy “that a very small percentage of bad priests have given a bad name to so many good ones.”

This is the Day airs at 10:30AM ET at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV. The show is rebroadcast at 7:30PM.

Anne Hughes will be interviewed on This is the Day on June 25th. She helped to organize letterstopriests.com and plans to publish a book which will be a collection of the letters submitted to the website.

Also to be interviewed on This is the Day, will be Liz Abramo, a high school junior from Massachusetts. She will talk about being a Catholic leader amongst her peer group.
