30th Anniversary of Death of Fulton Sheen Mass to Be Celebrated By Archbishop Timothy Dolan at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV

On Wednesday, December 9th, CatholicTV will air the Mass celebrating the 30th anniversary of the death of Servant of God Archbishop Fulton Sheen. The Mass will take place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and Archbishop Timothy Dolan will be the principal celebrant and homilist.

The Archbishop Fulton John Sheen Foundation is the official promoter of the Cause for the Canonization of Archbishop Sheen. CatholicTV supports the foundation's mission to introduce a new generation to the holy priest, missionary and communicator, Fulton J. Sheen, and to move the Church to proclaim him a saint. John Monahan narrated a retrospective of Archbishop Sheen which may be seen at the following site http://www.catholictv.com/videos/videos.aspx?videoID=343

Archbishop Sheen once served as the Director of the Pontifical Mission Society, the Propagation of the Faith. During this assignment, in 1951, he began what is known as the Mission Rosary. The rosary is said in the usual way; the beads are what make it distinct. The decades are represented by different colors, each standing for an area of the world: green for Africa, red for the Americas, white for Europe, blue is for Oceania (the island countries in the pacific) and the amber is for the Asian continent. When we pray the Mission Rosary, we pray for the people of those areas and the missionaries that serve them. Archbishop Sheen used to say that "...when you pray the World Mission Rosary, you've embraced the whole world in prayer."
Please join CatholicTV in honoring Servant of God, Archbishop Fulton Sheen during the Mass which will stream at www.CatholicTV.com and simultaneously on CatholicTV at 8PM Eastern Time.

CatholicTV regularly airs special events in the Catholic Church. More information on December Church programming on CatholicTV can be found at http://www.catholictv.com/features/default.aspx?featureStoryID=36

Servants of God Fulton Sheen, Cardinal Nguyễn Văn Thuận, and Patrick Peyton on CatholicTV in August

Servant of God Fulton Sheen and Cardinal Nguyễn Văn Thuận will be featured on CatholicTV during the week of August 3rd to August 9th. CatholicTV will air an interview of Cardinal Nguyễn by another Servant of God, Father Patrick Peyton, CSC. CatholicTV will also air a documentary on the life of Cardinal Nguyễn, who as Coadjutor Archbishop was imprisoned for 13 years in Vietnam. In addition, CatholicTV will air an interview of Bishop Fulton Sheen by Father Patrick Peyton.

Fulton Sheen was known for his preaching and especially his work on television and radio. His cause for canonization was officially opened in 2002. For twenty years, he hosted the night-time radio programme “The Catholic Hour” (1930-1950) before moving to television and presenting “Life Is Worth Living” (1951-1957) Sheen's final presenting role was on the syndicated “The Fulton Sheen Program” (1961-1968) with a format very similar to that of the earlier “Life is Worth Living show”. For this work, Sheen won an Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality.

Cardinal Nguyễn Văn Thuận was the nephew of South Vietnam’s first president and later became Coadjutor Archbishop. In 1975, the communists took over South Vietnam and Cardinal Nguyen was imprisoned for 13 years. Despite 9 years in solitary confinement, Cardinal Nguyễn was able to celebrate Mass secretly by using drops of wine and tiny hosts smuggled inside of a flashlight. While in prison, a guard asked Cardinal Nguyễn if he would seek revenge against the guard after his release. Cardinal Nguyễn told the guard “no” and that he loved him despite the way he was treated. Cardinal Nguyễn was named on lists of possible successors to Pope John Paul II before Cardinal Nguyễn’s death from cancer in 2002.

CatholicTV presents these programs in honor of the Year for Priests. These interviews and documentaries are parts of 2 regular blocks of programming at CatholicTV. The documentary on the life of Cardinal Văn Thuận will air during the programming block “CatholicTV Presents”. This block airs each week at the following times (Eastern): Monday-2PM; Tuesday-10PM; Wednesday-4PM; Thursday 6:30AM; Friday-9PM; Saturday 10:30AM; Sunday-2AM.

The interviews of both Cardinal Van Thuan, and Bishop Fulton Sheen will air back-to-back during the CatholicTV programming block called “Catholic Saints and Lay People”. This hour-long programming block airs each week during the following times: Tuesday-11:30AM; Wednesday-5AM; Friday-8AM; Sunday-10:30PM. These shows will air during the week of August 3rd-9th.
