World Day of Peace
Catholics around the world will celebrate the 43th World Day of Peace on New Year’s Day. Pope Benedict XVI has chosen “If You Want to Cultivate Peace, Protect Creation” as the theme for 2010 celebration.
Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, welcomed Pope Benedict’s message for World Day of Peace (WDP) as he called on Catholics in the United States to work and pray for peace.
Project Hope and Compassion update from Fr. Mockler
Fr. Peter Mockler, pastor of St. Ann's Parish in Mississippi shares an update on the Project Hope and Compassion (PHC) efforts. St. Ann's provides accommodations for those volunteers helping to restore the Gulf Coast. PHC is a tremendous ministry and the hospitality will touch your heart, if you ever get a chance to go, don't miss catfish night!
Fr. Mockler has been a guest on CatholicTV's This is the Day program, as has Samantha Ormond, a young adult from Acton, MA, who serves as a long term volunteer at PHC. Here is his recent update:
“Its been fifty two months since Katrina visited our shores, destroyed our property and changed our lives .Thank God we have come to the end of another Hurricane season and we can continue to recover. Uppermost in our minds in this season of giving and thanksgiving are the wonderful people who have come to our aid over the past four years through Project Hope & Compassion. PHC has played a significant role in the relief, recovery, and rebuilding effort post Katrina. We are so grateful to the thousands of volunteers who left what they were doing and put their lives on hold to come to our aid. We had no idea prior to Katrina how many Big Hearted people there were across the country who would touch our lives with healing.and renew our Hope. Although (the)Katrina recovery has moved off the newspapers, and many relief programs have shut down, we at PHC continue to be blessed with generous support and many volunteers, and we are resolved to continue our efforts until recovery is complete or we exhaust our resources.”

New Year’s Day With the Pope? CatholicTV Will Air Vatican Vespers and New Year’s Day Mass from the Vatican
CatholicTV will air vespers service from the Vatican at 8PM Eastern on New Year’s Eve. CatholicTV will also air the Mass of the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God at noon and 8PM on Jan 1st. New Year’s Day will also mark the 43rd World Day of Peace originally introduced by Pope Paul VI.
These Vatican events will stream at www.CatholicTV.com and also on CatholicTV where available.
The World Day of Peace is a feast day of the Catholic Church dedicated to peace. It was introduced in 1967 and was inspired by the encyclicals Pacem in Terris and Populorum Progressio of John XXIII and Paul VI.
Pope Benedict has already released a message for World Day of Peace and in it, the Pope talks extensively about the need to be respectful to the environment, which is God’s creation.
Pope Benedict’s message for the celebration of the World Day of Peace can be viewed at. http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/messages/peace/documents/hf_ben-xvi_mes_20091208_xliii-world-day-peace_en.html
Vespers service will include a homily by the Holy Father. In the first Vespers service of Advent, Pope Benedict XVI said, “In our daily lives we all experience having little time for the Lord and also little time for ourselves. We end by being absorbed in "doing". Is it not true that activities often absorb us and that society with its multiple interests monopolizes our attention? Is it not true that we devote a lot of time to entertainment and to various kinds of amusement? At times we get carried away. Advent, this powerful liturgical season that we are beginning, invites us to pause in silence to understand a presence. It is an invitation to understand that the individual events of the day are hints that God is giving us, signs of the attention he has for each one of us”.
CatholicTV regularly airs Papal and Vatican events: More information can be found at http://www.catholictv.com/shows/default.aspx?seriesID=57

Blessing of a Christmas Manger or Nativity Scene
From the Advent and Christmas resource section of the USCCB website:
In its present form the custom of displaying figures depicting the birth of Jesus Christ owes its origin to St. Francis of Assisi, who made the Christmas crèche or manger for Christmas Eve of 1223.
The blessing of the Christmas manger or nativity scene may take place on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time.
When the manger is set up in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed by a parent or another family member.
All make the sign of the cross as the leader says:
Our help is in the name of the Lord.
R/. Who made heaven and earth.
One of those present or the leader reads a text of sacred Scripture,
for example, Luke 2:1-8

The “This is the Day” show featuring Dr. Karls will air at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV at 10:30AM ET.
Magdalen College, in Warner, New Hampshire, is a four-year coeducational Roman Catholic liberal arts college offering a curriculum based on the classic texts of Western civilization.
The college was established by Catholic laymen responding to the Second Vatican Council’s call for spiritual renewal. It was chartered August 22, 1973 and enrolled its first students in September 1974.

This report was commissioned in response to the economic recession as a way of helping parents and students in their search for a college.
Dr. Karls is the 3rd president of Magdalen College and is an alumnus. He served as Executive Vice President before assuming the presidency in 1998. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Institute on Religious Life and the Sedes Sapientiae Foundation, which supports the Benedictine Monastery of San Benedetto in Norcia, Italy. Programming to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe feast
Our Blessed Mother appeared to a convert to the faith, Juan Diego in 1531. Juan shared this vision with the Bishop of Mexico City. Juan asked that the Bishop comply with Our Lady's request to have a church built. As Father Reed shares in his homily, the bishop was skeptical and asked Juan for proof of the apparition. Juan explained his plight to Our Lady and she asked him to have faith to gather flowers and bring them to the Bishop. Juan did so and carried the flowers in his cloak, which is called a tilma. When Juan Diego opened his tilma, everyone present fell to their knees before the image of Our Lady, which had appeared on the rough cloth. A church was built on the site of apparitions, which houses the tilma which pilgrims flock to each year, miracles continue to be attributed to the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
CatholicTV also will air some wonderful productions from the 127th Annual Convention of the Knights of Columbus which took place in Phoenix Arizona. The conference was followed by the First International Marian Congress on Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was during these events that Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson and Monsignor Chávez presented their book on Our Lady of Guadalupe. It is on the New York Time best sellers list.

Jason Evert Says ‘Teen Sex Rates Are Dropping’ During CatholicTV Interview
During his interview, Evert made several “eye-opening” statements about chastity, and the receptiveness of the chastity message by teens. Speaking about young people, Evert said, “They’re eating it [the chastity message] up like ants on a birthday cake because it’s not a bunch of rules so you don’t go to hell, it’s letting you be liberated so you can love for the right reasons.”
Some people “think that the kids are going to throw tomatoes at you, but “After speaking for 10 years to over a million kids, we haven’t had one disruptive audience, and we’ve been to correctional facilities and inner city schools.”
In November, “we gave a chastity talk at the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) and over 20,000 teens gave a standing ovation in response to a chastity talk.” said Evert.
“Teen sexual activity rates have been dropping consistently for the last 10-15 years. The majority of high school kids are virgins. There’s a lot of good news out there, but it’s not often portrayed in the media.”
Evert continued saying, “Chastity is not the elimination of sexual desire, it’s the perfection of it. It’s where you place love above the disordered desire to lust and use. If you really understand the church’s teachings for what they are, it’s not repressive, it’s liberating.”
“People say the culture glorifies, sex. No, culture doesn’t. It’s the Church that glorifies sex. Only in the Church’s teachings of human sexuality can they see the glory of God’s plan. The problem is not that the world is glorifying sex, the problem is that world is debasing sex so that you don’t see the full beauty of it.” said Evert during this interview.

Innocence, Sex, and Faith- The Story of “Emily’s Hope” Will be Told By Author On CatholicTV Talk Show
On Tuesday, December 15th, Ellen Gable, author of “Emily’s Hope” will be featured in an interview on the CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”. “Emily’s Hope” is the story of a young woman's journey and includes the battle to remain chaste, Biblical wisdom, and even references to Papal encyclicals, all intertwined in an exciting story from a young woman’s perspective.
“Emily’s Hope” received an Honorable Mention for Religious Fiction in the 2006 Independent Publisher Book Awards. Mark Cassanto called it a “challenging book” because of “the clear message that comes through challenging those who may be sitting on the fence with their views on LIFE, FAMILY, and FIDELITY.” Damon Owens, speaker, founder, New Jersey Natural Family Planning Association commented that the book was "Compelling...a real page turner."
Ellen Gable is also the author of “In Name Only”, published in June 2009. She has written various articles for Catholic magazines and websites. She and her husband, James Hrkach, are also the creators of the Family Life cartoon which illustrates Catholic family life, a topic she knows much about as the mother of five sons ages 10to 22.

Dolls Made in the Likeness of Saints? Co-Founder of ‘Original Saints’ To Be Interviewed on CatholicTV ‘This is the Day’ Program
On Friday, December 11th, Susie McCrea co-founder of ‘Original Saints’, a line of dolls, and other gifts which feature the saints, will be interviewed on the CatholicTV talk show “This is the Day”. Also, Major Paul Berg will appear via satellite from Forward Operating Base Warrior, Kirkuk Airbase in northern Iraq.
The show will stream live at www.CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV where available.
On “This is the Day”, McCrea will discuss the line of dolls as well as the inspiration behind them. That story comes from co-founder of Original Saints, Chris Opalenik.
Saying his prayers, particularly the Hail Mary, over and over, Opalenik began to dwell on the fact that “you really don’t see a lot of the Virgin Mary other than in church” and thought “how great it would be if we had something for all ages in the house.”
From there, he was inspired with the notion of creating dolls as a gift-giving idea to help spread the faith. In recognition of his original inspiration, their first prototype was of Mary, Queen of All Saints. “I do feel that I was inspired by her,” says Opalenik.
Major Berg is a member of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas. He has served in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2003, Chaplain Father Paul Madej was presiding at Mass which Major Berg was attending when rocket launches were taking place right over his base camp in Kuwait.
The interviews may be seen on Friday, December 11th, live at 10:30AM (EST) on CatholicTV where available (rebroadcast at 8PM). The show will also be streamed simultaneously at www.CatholicTV.com and will be available on the site’s archives starting Friday night. All videos at the website are viewable in full-screen. 30th Anniversary of Death of Fulton Sheen Mass to Be Celebrated By Archbishop Timothy Dolan at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV
On Wednesday, December 9th, CatholicTV will air the Mass celebrating the 30th anniversary of the death of Servant of God Archbishop Fulton Sheen. The Mass will take place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and Archbishop Timothy Dolan will be the principal celebrant and homilist.
The Archbishop Fulton John Sheen Foundation is the official promoter of the Cause for the Canonization of Archbishop Sheen. CatholicTV supports the foundation's mission to introduce a new generation to the holy priest, missionary and communicator, Fulton J. Sheen, and to move the Church to proclaim him a saint. John Monahan narrated a retrospective of Archbishop Sheen which may be seen at the following site http://www.catholictv.com/videos/videos.aspx?videoID=343
Archbishop Sheen once served as the Director of the Pontifical Mission Society, the Propagation of the Faith. During this assignment, in 1951, he began what is known as the Mission Rosary. The rosary is said in the usual way; the beads are what make it distinct. The decades are represented by different colors, each standing for an area of the world: green for Africa, red for the Americas, white for Europe, blue is for Oceania (the island countries in the pacific) and the amber is for the Asian continent. When we pray the Mission Rosary, we pray for the people of those areas and the missionaries that serve them. Archbishop Sheen used to say that "...when you pray the World Mission Rosary, you've embraced the whole world in prayer."
Please join CatholicTV in honoring Servant of God, Archbishop Fulton Sheen during the Mass which will stream at www.CatholicTV.com and simultaneously on CatholicTV at 8PM Eastern Time.

More information can be found at www.CatholicTVjr.com.
Father Reed, Director of the CatholicTV Network is pleased to have the opportunity to work closely with Liturgical Publications. “Our mission at CatholicTV is to assist people at the diocesan and parish level and to encourage a more active participation in the life and mission of the Church. I have a deep respect for the established and sophisticated ways that LPi supports the local Church. A partnership between LPi and CatholicTV seems quite natural and beneficial for Catholics and those who serve them,” Reed said.
"Liturgical Publications is excited about bringing this technology to churches as part of our parish communications strategy" said Tim Potrikus, Vice President at LPi.
